Former students of Uyghur Mektep in Adelaide, Australia have formed a social awareness and advocacy group, POET (People of East Turkistan). Here is one of their first projects called How To Pronounce Uyghur, where they spoke with visitors to the Al-Salam Festival and asked two questions: How do you pronounce this word? Where are Uyghurs from?
Enjoy!!
East Turkestan Republic. Order of Independence. 1945. Second Class. Script: al-Istaqlaliyat uchun koresh (‘For the freedom achieved by battle’). Silver and enamel. 42 mm (star point to point). Suspended from a forest-green woven cloth wrapped hanger with two silver bars.
Here are some of the women who fought for independence in the Ili Rebellion. Rizwangul Hashim (1925-1945) (top left) was famed for battle strategy and first aid, and also learnt to shoot different sorts of guns in order to replace snipers who became incapacitated on the battlefield. Her death saving a comrade, Chungakhun, from bullets at the Battle of Herembagh led to a popular battlecry: For Rizwangul! She will forever be remembered as a hero
Happy East Turkestan National Day! These are the flags of the first Republic of East Turkestan (1933) and second Republic of East Turkestan (1944)

@aegean-okraEvery day is Caturday for Turkish musician Sarper Durman, who shares his home in Istanbul with lots of cats, one of whom loves nothing more than sitting on Durman’s lap as his human plays the piano.
This handsome tabby appears quite soothed by the music as he rests his paws on the keyboard, sometimes contributing to the performance himself.
He’ll often gaze adoringly up at Durman and then get up to nuzzle his human chin with his own head.
Judging by this sleepy pair, Durman’s other cats also seem to enjoy the evening ambience of cozy candlelight and piano music.
Follow Sarper Durman on Instagram for many more videos of him and his serene and musical cat friends.

I’m not just amazed by the ridiculous amount of cute here, but also that he can play such beautiful music on only the parts of the keyboard that are not currently occupied by kitty.
i love him so much! i also recently learned that some of the songs he plays are his own compositions and i really want to know if there’s a song out there called ‘concerto for a whole piano except the bit my cat is sitting on at the moment’ because that would be quite the creative challenge/accomplishment.

Tears fill my eyes as I read the words on my screen. The world seems to stop spinning for the slightest second as I re-read the anonymous message over and over again, gripping on to the hope that the words will magically disappear. But they didn’t. Anon had done it; they’d figured out that the only way to make me take off my hijab was to call my hair ugly. My one weakness.
A tear streams down my left cheek.
Eight years of academy hijab training…wasted. I had to prove this extremely relevant and good-looking anonymous person wrong, I cared too much about what they thought. How could I live my life knowing that there is one person out there who thinks probably my hair is ugly maybe? How could I look myself in the mirror? How could I face my family? My shoulders shook as I cried silently, and my chair squeaked ever so slightly at the vibrations; as if it, too, was crying in sorrow.
It wasn’t until that moment that the second part of the message dawned on me… how would I prove them wrong without breaking the rules? Was it really against the rules? I reach into my hijab and pull out a scroll. At the very top, in cursive jet-black inked letters, the word ‘Rules’ stares back at me. My heart is racing as my eyes frantically read the scroll.
‘Rule #1: no killing people,’ it reads. I let out a whimper. There go my evening plans.
Suddenly, my eye catches the next words. The scroll is rustling in my trembling hands as I turn my face away, tears spraying out of my eyes like the spit of a white person as they try to justify racism. The cursive words felt more like a curse of words, vivid and refusing to disappear as if I were still staring at them even through my closed eyes.
Rule #2: don’t show ur hair girl it’s ugly lmaooooo
the phrase “curiosity killed the cat” is actually not the full phrase it actually is “curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back” so don’t let anyone tell you not to be a curious little baby okay go and be interested in the world uwu

Blood is thicker than waterThe blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.Meaning that relationships formed by choice are stronger than those formed by birth.
Let’s not forget that “Jack of all trades, master of none” ends with “But better than a master of one.”
It means that being equally good/average at everything is much better than being perfect at one thing and sucking at everything else. So don’t worry if you’re not perfect at something you do! Being okay is better!
These made me feel better
Also, “great minds think alike” ends with “but fools rarely differ”
It goes to show that conformity isn’t always a good thing. And that just because more than one person has the same idea, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea.
what the fuck why haven’t i heard the full version to any of these
“Birds of a feather flock together” ends with “until the cat comes.”
It’s actually a warning about fair-weather friends, not an assessment of how complementary people are.
I’ve always felt like these were cut down on purpose.
I really like these phrases and plan on spreading this knowledge.
The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
I want to make designs out of these.
Funny how all the half-finished ones encourage uniformity and upholding the status-quo, while the complete proverbs encourage like…living exciting, eclectic lives driven by choice and personal passion.
NICE
